Changes to Local Government
In March 2026, the UK Government confirmed a three-unitary authority model for Norfolk, replacing the current two-tier system (county and district councils) by April 2028. The new structure will create three councils: East Norfolk, West Norfolk, and Greater Norwich, aiming to improve efficiency and service delivery. Necton will be in West Norfolk.
Breckland District Council Elections
Although Breckland and the other Districts Councils are due to be phased out in April 2028. It is expected the new unitary authorities will “shadow” the old districts councils during a transition period. Breckland have decided not to hold elections for District Councillors this year or next year to ensure a smooth and efficient handover by keeping the existing Councillors in place.
Norfolk County Council Elections
The last full election of Norfolk County Councillors was in 2021 and with elections due every 5 years the election will take place on the 7th of May 2026. These will be based on the new boundaries as explained below.
As Breckland is phased out the new West Norfol Councillors will a play a larger role in how your local services are delivered and how Council Tax revenue is spent. It is therefore important you vote on the 7th of May for a strong and competent candidate to lead us forward.
Electoral boundaries
Norfolk contains over 700 towns and civil parishes, grouped into 84 electoral wards each having it’s own representative or Ward Councillor. Each ward should have a similar number of residents to provide electoral equity. But, over time population changes cause certain areas to be over or under represented. The Local Government Boundary Commission for England, an independent body accountable to Parliament, is responsible for electoral boundaries. The changes to the ward boundaries to compensate for these population changes will become effective from the 7th of May 2026.
Many of these wards have names based on the historic “Hundreds” which were created in the early 10th century and catalogued in the Domesday book. Necton is currently in the Necton and Launditch Ward. After the May elections Necton will become part of the Yare and All Saints Ward which will be renamed as the Yare and Necton Ward.
The boundary changes will not affect: Parliamentary constituencies, Postcodes or Local Taxes.
Detailed maps of both the old and new boundaries can be viewed/downloaded from
